Description
Army entered the 1928 game against Notre Dame undefeated. In front of a packed house at Yankee Stadium, Notre Dame and Army battled to a 0-0 halftime tie. During his halftime speech, Notre Dame Head Coach Knute Rockne uttered words that will forever be remembered. Rockne told the team to "Win one for the Gipper." This was a reference to George Gip, an All-American player at Notre Dame who had died 8 years earlier. Gip had told Rockne that at some point when the team was "up against it, when things are wrong and the breaks are beating the boys, ask them to go in there with all they've got and win just one for the Gipper." Notre Dame took their legendary coach's words to heart and beat Army 12-6 handing Army their first loss of the 1928 season.
